Have you ever woken up and it’s like you were already behind? The alarm goes off, you grab your phone, start piddling…and now 20 minutes have disappeared into thin air.
Then it's a mad dash to get ready, get out the door, and try to catch up for the rest of the morning.
What happened? How did I get so behind? Why are my mornings always so frazzled?
Feel free to nod your head in agreement if any of this sounds familiar.
Because I used to start my days like this! Then I made one small change to my mornings.
And my focus got sharper. My business started moving forward. I was finally the one running my day.
(And no, I didn't have to wake up at an insane time or start taking ice baths. No thanks.)
I’m going to walk you through what's been working for me and what might work for you too.

Your Morning Sets the Tone for Everything
Think about your best days. The ones where you flew through your to-do list, had tons of energy, and still had plenty leftover come the evening.
I'd bet money those days started with some kind of intention.
And your worst days probably started like the one I described above. Rushing and no time for yourself.
There’s a connection here! How you spend your first 30 to 60 minutes basically programs your brain for everything that comes after. So when you take even a tiny bit of control over that window, the ripple effect is kind of amazing.
The trick is creating something that fits your life. Copying someone else's routine almost always falls apart within a week.
The Building Blocks of a Successful Morning
I like to think of a morning routine as a menu, like you’re ordering at a restaurant. You pick what sounds good, leave what doesn't. In the mood for dessert? If yes, then go for it!
But you don’t have to eat everything on the menu.
The same applies to your morning routine. Pick what you want and leave the rest.
And you can (and should) always adjust as your life changes. Here are the pieces that tend to make the biggest difference.
Wake Up Earlier
I can’t pretend to know what you have going on in your mornings. My guess is that it’s a lot.
If you can give yourself even 15 to 30 minutes before everyone else in your house needs something from you, what would that do? That little pocket of time before the requests start rolling in is where your best thinking happens.
Yes, I know, waking up earlier sounds terrible. But try moving your alarm back by just 10 minutes this week. Then another 10 next week. Ease into it.
Your body adjusts faster than you'd think, especially if you're going to bed a little earlier too.
Get Moving (Even a Little)
If an early morning spin class is your jam, then do it!
Even a 10 minute stretch on your bedroom floor counts. A quick walk around the block, some yoga from a YouTube video you love. Movement first thing wakes up your brain and gets your blood flowing.
On busy mornings, I do a few minutes of stretching while my coffee brews. On days where I have more time, I'll go for a 20 minute walk and listen to something inspiring.
Nourish Your Noggin
I had a bad habit of spending waaaay too much time on my phone first thing in the morning. And the worst part is that it was totally unproductive! I was starting my day already stressed or distracted by someone else's stuff.
Now I read a few pages of a book, or read content that moves my business forward. Something that fills me up.
Try it for three days and see how different your mornings are.
If you'd like to use some of that morning time to work on extra income, my free playbook shows how recurring income from home works with simple math. Grab it right below.
Get Clear on Your Top 3
Every morning, I have a short list of things that would make today a success. I recommend no more than three.
Why? Well, when you narrow it down to three, you actually get them done. When you write a list of 10 or 15 things, you’re more likely to get frustrated and feel like a failure.
The three things keep you focused and give you something to be proud of at the end of the day.
Do One Thing Just for You
Drink your coffee in silence. Put on a song you like. Spend a few minutes on your skincare routine and savor it. Drink a large glass of water.
This is the step too many women skip because it seems indulgent or like a waste of time. But again, when you start the day doing something that's yours (even something super simple), you’re telling yourself that you’re worth it.
And you absolutely are!
Your Morning Routine Is a Business Strategy
Here's something I wish someone had told me years ago. Protecting your morning is one of the smartest business moves you can make!
When you give your freshest, sharpest brainpower to your highest priority task before (…fill in the blank…) takes over, things start moving faster.
I now dedicate time each morning on my most important business task before I open my inbox. Sometimes that's creating content. Sometimes it's reviewing my numbers. Sometimes it's brainstorming new ideas.
That dedicated time has done more for my business growth than hours of scattered afternoon work ever did!
And if you're working to create something on the side while working a full time job or raising kids (or both), your morning might be the only time that's truly yours. Please use it wisely!
Even a few focused minutes on your goals each morning adds up to solid momentum over weeks and months. I keep my goals in Let’s Goal so they're right there when I sit down.
Quick Sample Routines You Can Steal
The 20 Minute Power Morning (when time’s tight)
- 5 minutes: stretch or movement
- 5 minutes: read or listen to something good
- 5 minutes: write your top 3 priorities
- 5 minutes: work on your most important business task
The 45 Minute CEO Morning (when you've got more time)
- 10 minutes: walk or workout
- 10 minutes: read or journal
- 5 minutes: top 3 priorities and goal review
- 15 minutes: focused business task
- 5 minutes: something for you
The Weekend Reset Morning (for catching up)
- Sleep in a little (hey, you've earned it!)
- Coffee or tea, but no phone
- Journal or reflect on your week
- Set your intentions for the week ahead
- Do something fun that has absolutely nothing to do with productivity
Feel free to mix/match/edit as you see fit. No set rules here!
When Your Routine Falls Apart…
…because it will. Some mornings someone in the house is up earlier than you expect, the dog needs out, or you overslept because you were up late finishing a project. Guess what? That’s called life!
What I believe in is consistency.
So pick one thing that's your “no matter what” anchor. Maybe it's your top 3 list…or five minutes of reading….or drinking your coffee before you look at your phone.
On those hard mornings, do that one thing. That's enough! You can always get back to your full routine the next day.

Here’s to Your Tomorrow Morning
You deserve a morning that makes you excited to get going. No need for a massive morning overhaul.
Pick something from my post that sounds good and try it tomorrow. See how it goes. Then add another one the following week. These micro changes, done over and over again, are what lead to big and sustainable changes.
By the way, if you're working on building something for yourself and you want a business model that fits into these kinds of small, focused time blocks, I stumbled onto something a while back that I wish I'd known about sooner.
It's called the Turnkey Residual Income System. It's a done-for-you setup, and the math behind it surprised me. If this sounds like it might be a good fit, have a look under the hood and decide for yourself.
