You know that feeling when you have a zillion ideas bouncing around in your head, but somehow nothing's happening?

Yup, been there, done that, wrote the book.

Turns out, there's a reason why successful people swear by writing down their goals.

It's because getting your goals out of your head and onto paper does something your brain can't ignore.

If you want to see what I mean, then read on.

Your Brain on Paper

I know, I know, it all sounds a bit woo-woo, but stay with me. When you write something down, your brain treats it differently than when you just think about it.

There's actual science to back it up too! The act of writing basically engages the part of your brain that decides what's important enough to notice.

So once you write a goal down, your brain starts looking for opportunities to make it happen. It's like when you're thinking about buying a red car…and suddenly you see red cars everywhere.

But they were always there! You just weren't tuned in yet. That’s what writing down your goals does, it tunes you in.

The 5-Minute Morning Move That Changes Everything

What I love about this is how simple it is. Any notebook works (and if fancy leather-bound ones are your thing, go for it).

Five minutes. Every morning. Before you check your phone (unless of course you journal from your phone which I think is a fabulous idea).

Write down your top three goals.

Goals and tasks are two different things. Your tasks are actions you might do in a given day. Your goals are the bigger things you're working toward.

Some days you'll write the same three. That's fine! You're reinforcing what’s important to you.

Other days, one might change a bit. That's fine too. You're allowed to evolve. In fact I hope that you do!

The basis of it all is in the daily practice of reminding yourself what you're aiming for.

Get Rid of the Goals You Don't Really Want

So you had a goal from years ago. Great! But if you keep writing down a goal, and never doing anything about it…maybe it's not actually your goal.

Maybe it's what you think you should want.

Maybe it's what someone else wants for you.

Maybe it was your goal back then but it isn't anymore because you’ve changed.

And that's totally ok! Because now you’ve freed up some head space for even better goals.

Journaling helps you figure out what's real and what's bogging you down. If you write down "launch a side business" every day for three weeks and feel nothing but dread... that's information. Listen to it.

The goals that stick around are the ones where you get just a tad bit nervous, and a little excited at the same time.

And if earning from home is one of the goals that makes you a little nervous and a little excited, my free playbook shows how recurring income works with simple math. Grab it right below.

How to Track Progress

Maybe you’re super organized and tracking your progress means color-coded charts and data points. Good for you! If that’s more than you need, make it really easy on yourself.

Start by asking yourself…Am I closer today than I was last week?

Then write it down. Even if the answer is "a little bit" or if it's "not really, but I know what to do next."

Whoever said that progress is linear? Some weeks you'll fly. Other weeks you'll barely move. The journaling practice keeps you honest without beating yourself up.

And when you look back a month or two (or six) later, you'll be amazed at how far you've come. It’s much harder to see it in the day-to-day grind.

The Tool You Didn't Know You Needed

If you’re thinking that goal journals have to be physical notebooks, think again! Perhaps you haven’t tried digital journaling.

I'm not going to go into all of the features here because really, you should just check it out yourself. But if you've ever wanted your goals, habits, and progress all in one place, then this might be for you.

It Needs to Be Yours

As you can see, there's no "right way" to journal for your goals.

Bullet points? Great. Full paragraphs? Also great. Voice memos you transcribe later? If it works, it works.

But it has to be yours and it has to be doable. If your system is so complicated that you dread it, you’re not going to want to do it.

When’s the right time? Some journal at night. Some do it over coffee. Some do it on their lunch break in the car. What matters is what works for you.

Goal Journaling FAQs

How long should I spend journaling about my goals each day?
Honestly, five minutes is plenty! I like to do mine first thing in the morning before I check my phone. Just jot down your top three goals and remind yourself what you're aiming for. It's the daily habit that makes the difference.
Do I need a special notebook or app to start goal journaling?
Not at all! Any notebook you have lying around works just fine. If you'd rather keep everything on your phone, digital journaling is a fabulous option too. Bullet points, full paragraphs, voice memos... whatever feels doable for you is the right way to do it.
What if I keep writing the same goal and never act on it?
That's actually really useful information! Sometimes a goal is what we think we should want, or what someone else wants for us. If a goal fills you with dread instead of that little mix of nervous and excited, it's totally ok to let it go and make room for better ones.
What happens if I miss a day or break my streak?
No biggie, it happens to all of us! Missing a day doesn't mean you failed. Just pick your journal back up the next day and keep going. Consistency beats perfection every time, and when you look back in a few months, you'll be amazed at how far you've come.

Your Goals Deserve More Than Your Head

The goals that stay in your head stay there. The ones you write down get accomplished.

At some point you’re likely to skip a day. Probably more than one. And it’s so easy to say that you "ruined your streak" and give up. No biggie, just start again the next day!

And if one of your goals is earning from home, grab the free playbook above for a simple plan to write into tomorrow’s entry.
