Being a mom is a full-time job (unpaid of course) on its own. But add running a business from home and it can feel like you’re juggling a hundred things at once. Time management helps you create structure so your days seem more…well, structured.
With the right strategies, you can be productive, grow your business, and spend real, meaningful time with your family.
And with that, let’s get on to the time management tips!
Step 1: Set Clear Goals and Priorities
When you're wearing multiple hats every day, your to-do list can feel endless. That’s why setting clear goals and priorities matters so much. It gives your day a basic framework and helps you focus on what needs your attention.
Start by identifying what’s truly important to you, both in your business and your personal life. Think about where you want to be in three months or six months, and use that to guide your daily tasks.
SMART goals can help here: break big ideas into smaller, doable steps with deadlines.
This also gives you permission to say no. If something doesn’t move the needle or fit with your goals, you don’t need to put energy towards it. It’s easy to fill your day being “busy,” but not productive.
And believe me, there is a difference!
Step 2: Create a Daily and Weekly Schedule
When you’re balancing work and motherhood, a simple schedule can be your best friend. It doesn’t need to be overly detailed, it just needs to work for you.
Now that you have your goals from step 1, next is to map out your week. Use whatever method works, e.g., planner, calendar app, whiteboard on the fridge.
Schedule your most focused work during quiet periods like nap time, early in the mornings, or when the kids are at school. Then save admin tasks or lighter work for times when you end to get interrupted.
And make sure to add in buffer time. Life with kids is unpredictable, so leave some breathing room in your day.
It might sound corny, but visualize yourself doing your schedule throughout the week. Just like a visual map, you’re telling your brain what’s going to happen in the coming week.
That doesn't mean everything will go according to plan 100% (that would be amazing though!), but you’re at least prepped for things to go in the direction of a plan.
Step 3: Use Time-Saving Tools and Systems
There are some great tools that can save you hours every week. The less you’re stuck in repetitive tasks, the more time you’ll have to grow your business. Or get more rest.
Use automation where you can. Schedule social media posts, automate emails, and use bookkeeping tools that streamline invoicing. Apps like Trello, Asana, and ClickUp help keep your projects organized so nothing falls through the cracks.
I find that templates are another huge time-saver. Create reusable ones for client emails, social posts, or blog outlines so you're not starting from scratch every time. The idea is to keep things simple and efficient.
Step 4: Maximize Your Work Time
When you finally get a block of quiet time to work, you’ll want to make the most of it. That means using that time purposely, not just responding to emails or checking Instagram.
Try working in short, focused sprints like the Pomodoro technique, 25 minutes on, 5 minutes off. It keeps your brain fresh and helps you stay focused.
Pay attention to when you're the most alert. For some moms, it’s early morning before the house wakes up. For others, it’s after bedtime. Use those hours for your most important work.
And limit distractions (...as much as possible). Let your family know when you need a quiet moment. Use headphones, close extra tabs, and silence notifications so you can stay in the zone.
Step 5: Delegate and Outsource When You Can
You might be a solopreneur, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Running a business and managing a household is a lot, and getting help is a smart move.
Share household responsibilities with your family. Older kids can handle simple chores, and your partner can take on more than they might think.
You’ll know it’s time to hire help if you're washing the dishes is getting in the way of landing more paying customers!
As for outsourcing in your business, start with the basics. Maybe you hire someone to edit blog posts, schedule social media posts, or handle customer service emails.
Even freeing up just a few hours each week can have a big impact on your mental space and momentum.
And if your budget allows, consider part-time childcare. Just a couple focused hours can help you tackle the high-level work that can propel your work to new heights.
Step 6: Set Boundaries Between Work and Family
Working from home blurs the lines between business and family life, but having clear boundaries helps you stay productive without sacrificing your personal time.
Create a dedicated workspace, even if it’s a desk in your office. Yes, it’s a thing! Having your own workspace gives your brain a cue that it’s time to work.
Let your family know your work hours. This helps minimize interruptions and creates predictability for everyone.
And just as important, know when to log off. When you’re done for the day, be done. Close the laptop, shut down the tabs, and step into family time fully. You deserve it.
Step 7: Take Care of Yourself Too
You’re running a business and raising a family, that’s a lot. To keep going, you have to take care of yourself along the way.
Make time for things that recharge you. That could be taking a walk, reading something fun, or doing a quick yoga session.
Get enough sleep. Or at least try to get more sleep. You’ll be way more productive with a rested brain than with a foggy one running on caffeine and stress.
And be kind to yourself. Some days will go off the rails. Others will be better. Just be confident that you’re making progress.
