Blogging is one of the most flexible and mom-friendly side hustles out there. It’s something you can build in your own way, at your own pace.
So if you’ve been thinking about starting a blog but have no clue where to start, or maybe you’ve started and gotten stuck, I’ll guide you through the process. Step by step!
Step 1: Know Why You’re Doing This
Before anything else, ask yourself why you want to start a blog. Is it a creative outlet? A way to document your motherhood journey? Or are you hoping to eventually replace your 9-to-5?
You absolutely need to know and be solid in your “why” before you get started because launching a profitable blog takes time.
I can’t stress this enough!
Maybe you want a platform to generate passive income so you can spend more time with your kids. Or you’ve got advice, stories, or strategies that other moms could really benefit from. Whatever your reason is, write it down and remember it.
Set small goals at first. For example, your first month goal could be to publish three posts. Then the second month goal is to figure out what the heck SEO even means.
No pressure to have it all figured out overnight. Progress counts.
Step 2: Choose a Niche That Feels Right
Your niche is basically your blog’s personality. It’s what you’ll be known for and what helps people find you. No need to overthink it. A niche can be narrowed down as you go.
What are you naturally passionate about? What do other moms come to you for? Parenting hacks? Budget-friendly meals? Home organizing? Wellness tips? Homeschooling?
Start with something that you can talk about…without running out of ideas.
You can start broad and then get more targeted on a topic as you get into a groove of posting. Bonus points if it’s something that other moms are actively searching for help with, that’s where the money potential grows.
Some broad popular mom blog niches include:
• Motherhood and parenting advice
• Family budgeting and money tips
• Clean living and natural wellness
• Easy recipes and meal planning
• DIY, home decor, or organization
Your niche is where your story and someone else’s need meet.
Step 3: Set Up Your Blog
Notice how setting up your blog isn’t the first step? That’s because you really need to know why you’re starting a blog and what you want to blog about before getting into the tech side of things.
With that said, this step is where some people freeze up, but I promise it’s not as complicated as it sounds. You just need to get the basics in place.
Start with a solid platform that’s flexible and reliable. Then pair it with a clean, easy-to-navigate theme (there are tons of free or affordable options out there).
There are several options out there:
- WordPress
- Wix
- Showit
- Squarespace
- Kajabi
I use Builder by HBA and I love it because I have lots of flexibility and customization, without having to be a developer. Regardless of which platform you go with, I highly recommend not going for a free plan if your aim is to monetize your blog!
Choose a domain name that reflects your niche and feels true to you, short, memorable, and easy to spell. Keep the layout clean, mobile-friendly, and focused on helping readers find your content quickly. You can always tweak and improve on it later.
What matters most is getting your first post up and running.
Step 4: Create Content That Moms Actually Want to Read
When you sit down to write, just talk to your readers like you’d talk to a friend over coffee. What do they need help with? What are they Googling late at night when the house is finally quiet?
Useful content builds trust and keeps people coming back. For example:
- How-to posts that solve real problems
- Personal stories with a relatable spin
- Product roundups or reviews from a mom’s perspective
- Lists and cheat sheets that make life easier
Stay consistent by using a content calendar. Even if you only publish one post a week, that’s 52 posts a year. If that’s too much, then aim for 1-2 posts a month. Either way, your content adds up.
And don’t forget about keywords and SEO (search engine optimization). Using the right strategies can help your posts appear in search results, bringing more eyeballs to your blog.
But I wouldn’t recommend going down the SEO and keyword rabbit hole just yet. First be sure that you can get into the rhythm of publishing content. You can always go back to older posts and update the content for SEO-optimization.
Step 5: Grow a Community, Not Just a Following
Now it’s time to really connect with your readers. That’s what turns readers into loyal followers and, eventually, customers.
Start by picking one or two platforms where your audience hangs out (Pinterest and Instagram are great for mom content). Share your blog posts there and interact with your audience. Respond to comments, start conversations, and show your personality.
You can also build community through an email list. Offer a free printable checklist, free guide or helpful template in exchange for their email. This is how you stay in touch, provide value, and build trust over time.
Join blogging Facebook groups or mom entrepreneur circles to help you stay motivated and learn from others. There’s a whole tribe of women doing this too.
Step 6: Start Monetizing (Even If You’re Just Starting Out)
There’s this myth that you need thousands of pageviews before you can make any money blogging. Not true!
Of course, with more quality traffic you are bringing to your blog, and with providing more value, your earning potential increases. But there are ways to start monetizing your blog, even with a small audience.
Affiliate marketing is a great place to begin. If you’re already recommending products you love, why not earn a commission from it? My recommendation is to earn high percentage and recurring commissions, like the Turnkey Residual Income System I promote.
Sponsored posts come next. As your blog grows, brands may reach out to collaborate, but you can also pitch them yourself. Just make sure you stay authentic, only work with brands you genuinely trust.
You can also sell your own digital products like checklists, templates, or mini guides. If you’re further along, consider launching a course or a membership.
You’re creating value from your own life experience, and other moms want that.
Step 7: Balance Blogging with Mom Life
Blogging with kids means you need to be intentional with your time.
Batch content when you can. Write two or three posts at once when inspiration hits. Schedule social posts ahead of time. Use tools like Canva, Later, or Trello to streamline your work.
Have a dedicated workspace. Set boundaries around when you’re “on” and when you’re off, so your blog doesn’t creep into every moment of your day.
Please, as much as possible, try to stay out of the comparison trap. Every blogger’s journey looks different. You might post once a week while someone else posts daily. That other blogger might have a team of ghostwriters working for them!
Step 8: Stay in It for the Long Game
Blogging is a slow-and-steady strategy. Ok, you’ve been warned!
It takes time to grow quality traffic, income, and confidence. But it's so incredibly rewarding! With consistency and dedication, you can create something meaningful, and profitable.
When things feel slow (and they will!), revisit your why. Remember the big picture. Re-read your old posts and notice how far you’ve come. Adjust your strategy when needed, but don’t quit just because it takes time. It’s supposed to.
