A stylish home office setup with a wooden desk featuring gold knobs, a pink velvet chair, an iMac, a ring light, and notebooks.

When I first started working from home, I thought I could make it work from any room, so long as I had my laptop.

Huge mistake!

Between the temptation to turn on the TV…or take a nap, I knew something had to change.

Running a home business takes more than a laptop and Wi-Fi. To take yourself seriously as an entrepreneur, I believe it’s critical to operate like an entrepreneur. And when you do, you give your business income room to grow. Right? Right??

So, skip the couch in front of the TV and the bed where you sleep. You need a real setup. Somewhere that tells the world you’re the CEO of your own company…even if your commute is only 10 steps from your bedroom.

Here’s how to plan and design a home office setup that helps you stay focused, creative, and ready to handle all the moving parts of running your own business.

Why Focus on Your Home Office Setup

Take it from me, when you blur the lines between “home” and “work,” everything suffers. If you’re checking client emails while half-watching Netflix on the couch, or taking Zoom calls in your bedroom with laundry piled in the background, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

A great home office setup does three important things:

It tells your brain, “Hey, we’re at work now.”

It shows clients and collaborators that you’re serious (yes, your clients are looking at your background on video calls).

It protects your sanity by keeping work in one zone.

When I finally carved out my own little office area, I noticed my productivity shoot up. I was no longer distracted by house chores, I had everything I needed in one spot, and most importantly, I wanted to sit down and get things done.

Step One: Pick Your Spot

Not everyone has a spare room they can turn into an office, and that’s alright! What matters is choosing a spot that works for you (no pun intended).

If you do have a separate room, amazing! Shut that door, light a candle, and revel in your productivity palace. If not, pick a corner of your living room, a little nook in your bedroom, or even a section of your hallway. The trick is making it yours.

Here’s what I recommend thinking about:

Natural light

If you can snag a spot near a window, do it. Sunlight makes everything better (your mood, your skin, your Zoom glow).

Noise level

If you’re constantly battling barking dogs or kids running past, look for a quieter area. A door you can close makes all the difference for privacy.

Background check

Remember, whatever’s behind you on Zoom is basically a window into your life. Choose a spot you can style up a bit, no one needs to see your cluttered living room.

Personally, I can’t stand working in dark places. Give me a window and a view (even if it’s just of the neighbor’s fence) and I’m happy.

Comfortable home office furniture with a desk, supportive chair, and storage

Step Two: Furniture That Works as Hard as You Do

Let’s talk furniture. This is where most people cut corners, and it’s also where you’ll regret it.

Your Desk

You. Need. A. Desk. Go for one that matches your style of working. Do you spread out with notebooks, sticky notes, and three drinks at once? Get a bigger desk. Love minimalism? A simple writing desk is perfect. If you like variety, standing desks are great for switching things up.

Your Chair

Please, for the love of your back, get a real ergonomic office chair. I cannot stress this enough, you’ll be sitting in it for hours, so it needs to be comfortable and supportive.

Storage

Think shelves, filing cabinets, or baskets. Clutter = distraction. Keep the clutter out of sight so your brain can focus.

When I finally invested in a proper chair, I realized just how much discomfort I had been tolerating. Both my productivity and my mood improved. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Step Three: Tech is There for a Reason

Running a business from home means you need reliable tech. And that means more than a laptop.

A solid computer: Laptop or desktop, make sure it has the speed and storage for your work. That might mean investing in the right software and subscriptions up front (my website, funnels and emails all run on Builder by HBA) so that you don’t have to think about it later.

Dual monitors: If you find yourself multi-tasking a lot, then opt for two monitors. You’ve been warned though… once you try working with two screens, you’ll never want to go back.

Webcam + mic: Give your clients a clear picture and crisp audio. Invest in quality.

Internet: If your Wi-Fi lags, upgrade it. This is one of those areas where cutting costs will cost you more in stress and missed opportunities.

Backups: External hard drives or cloud storage will save you one day, probably sooner than you think.

Once your tech is set, you're ready to work on extra income. My free playbook shows how recurring income from home works with simple math. Grab it right below.

Step Four: Lighting & Ambiance

Lighting is everything. If you’ve ever tried working in a room with harsh overhead lighting, you know it’s a fast track to headaches.

Here’s what I’d go with:

Task lighting: A desk lamp with warm light for reading and writing.

Ambient lighting: Floor lamps, string lights, or wall sconces to make the space comfy.

Candle/candle warmer: Optional, but trust me, it helps you want to stay in productivity-mode longer.

I keep a little desk lamp for late nights because it gives off this soft, library-like look. Yes please!

Tidy, organized desk with supplies put away and a to-do list ready

Step Five: Keep It Organized

For me, clutter zaps productivity. The more piles of paper and random cords lying around, the harder it is to focus.

A few easy fixes:

Drawer organizers (no more rummaging for a pen).

Cable clips to keep wires in check.

A filing system for papers you need to keep.

A habit of clearing your desk at the end of the day.

I have a little ritual. Before I log off, I clear my desk, put everything back, and set out my to-do list for tomorrow. That way, I start the next day ready to go.

Step Six: Make it Yours

This is the fun part…style!

Your home office setup should feel like a zone for inspiration and creativity. Add touches that reflect your personality or your brand.

A few plants (I’m obsessed with how they make a room come to life).

Inspirational sayings (I keep mine on my wall and floating shelves to keep me focused on long-term goals).

Artwork, photos, or even some throw pillows that just make you happy.

Don’t underestimate the power of style here. When your workspace feels good, you’ll want to spend time in it.

Step Seven: Comfort + Health

It’s easy to forget that your office needs to support your body as well as your business.

Adjust your monitor so it’s at eye level (bye-bye, neck pain). Keep your chair at the right height (it’s preferable for your feet to be flat on the floor).

Take stretch breaks, seriously, set a timer if you have to. Add a rug to make the space inviting.

I once worked an entire day without getting up (bad idea), and I paid for it the next morning. Now I take little breaks to walk, stretch, or even just refill my water. It’s amazing how much better I feel when I do.

Step Eight: Tools That Increase Productivity

You’ve probably heard the old adage “working smarter, not harder.” Well, your office can help you with that.

Whiteboards or corkboards for jotting down ideas and reminders.

Noise-canceling headphones if you live in a noisy area.

Planners, calendars, or goal apps like Let’s Goal to keep you on schedule.

One of my favorite tricks is I set up my desk every night before bed. Laptop ready, list of to-dos on the desk, coffee cup waiting. It makes the next morning effortless because I walk in and get to it.

Step Nine: Boundaries Are Everything

Here’s the unglamorous truth about running a home business. If you don’t set boundaries, your work will take over your life.

That’s where your home office setup becomes your best friend. It creates physical boundaries (work stays in that space). But you also need time boundaries, actual work hours.

Close the laptop. Step out of your office. Please, please, please don’t take work into bed with you. I know...it’s easier said than done, but it’s the only way to stay sane and avoid burnout.

When I started shutting my office door at the end of the day, it was like leaving a “real” workplace. It freed up my non-working hours.

Home Office Setup FAQs

Do I really need a separate room for a home office?
Not at all! I know it can feel like you need a whole room to be taken seriously, but a corner of your living room, a nook in your bedroom, or even a section of a hallway can work beautifully. What matters most is that the space is yours, it has good light if you can manage it, and it signals to your brain that it's time to work.
What should I invest in first if my budget is tight?
Start with your chair. I learned this one the hard way! You'll be sitting for hours, and a proper ergonomic chair makes a huge difference in how you feel and how much you get done. After that, reliable internet and good lighting are the next upgrades that pay off quickly.
How do I keep work from taking over my whole house?
Give work one home and give yourself work hours. Keep your business stuff in your office area, clear your desk at the end of the day, and close the laptop when you're done. Shutting my office door at night made a huge difference for me, and I think it will for you too.
How can I make my home office feel inspiring without spending a fortune?
Little touches go a long way! A couple of plants, a lamp with warm light, an inspirational saying on the wall, or a photo that makes you smile can completely change the feel of your space. When your workspace feels good, you'll actually want to spend time in it.

Making Room for Big Business Thinking

Notice how nothing about having a great home office setup meant spending a fortune on furniture and decor? That’s because creating the right setup is more about having a dedicated area to be focused and be able to treat your business like the real thing it is.

For me, the transformation was huge. Going from the couch to a space I actually love sitting in changed how I work and how I feel about my business. If you’d like a simple plan for the business side, grab the free playbook above.
